General Information:Situated 200 miles off the northeastern coast of Brazil, the National Marine Sanctuary of Fernando de Noronha is an ecological jewel. A mountainous archipelago made up of 21 islands, the largest is only seven square miles. With crystal-clear water and rich marine life, it is like no other place on earth. The archipelago was declared a national marine park in 1988 in order to preserve its precious environment and incredible variety of marine life. It is home to 168 families of mollusks, 72 species of crustaceans, 230 colorful fish, and huge numbers of dolphins, endangered turtles, and sharks. It is also home to the largest bird breeding colonies of all the islands in the South Atlantic.
